What is private van insurance?
Private van insurance is a policy that can be taken out when you only drive your van for personal purposes or commuting.
Activities you might use your vehicle for include:
- Going on holiday (either in the UK or abroad)
- Camping trips
- Taking part in hobbies or activities like mountain biking or fishing trips
- Using it to go on hikes with your dogs
- Shopping
- Transporting personal belongings
- Moving house – or helping friends move
Do I need private van insurance or commercial cover?
This depends on how you plan on using your vehicle. For instance, if you only use your van for personal use or commuting, a private van insurance policy is the best option.
If, on the other hand, you use your vehicle to make money, you’ll need a commercial van insurance policy. We can cover commercial vehicles too, including those used for courier work and company work. We can also insure classic commercial vehicles.

Can I insure a van for private use?
Yes, you can get private van insurance – otherwise known as personal van insurance – if you only use your vehicle for hobbies, holidays, or any other personal hobbies and activities.
Do I need van insurance for personal use?
Just like any other type of vehicle, private van insurance is a legal requirement so you must take out cover before travelling on public roads.
How much is private van insurance?
The cost of your personal van insurance depends on multiple factors, including your driving history and any NCB you’ve built up, as well as where you’ll be driving, how many miles you’ll cover each year, and whether you need personal possessions cover.
If you want to get an idea of how much your quote will be, speak to us directly and we can personalise your quote to meet your needs.
What are the different types of personal van insurance?
The three main types are:
- Third party: this is the minimum level of cover you can take out to legally drive on public roads in the UK. It covers you for any damage caused to other people’s vehicles or property, as well as any injuries they might sustain.
- Third party, fire and theft: this provides the same level of cover as third party insurance, as well as the cost of repairing or replacing your vehicle if it’s damaged by fire or stolen.
- Fully comprehensive: this is the highest level of cover you can take out. It covers everything in the previous two levels, plus any damage to your vehicle regardless of who was at fault for the accident.

In general, no. The risks involved with owning a van for personal use are generally lower than if you were to own a van for commercial use.
