BBC and Sky Sports Formula One commentator Harry Benjamin is the latest guest on series 10 of the award-winning podcast Fuelling Around.

Benjamin is now one of the country’s leading voices in the world’s biggest motorsport discipline, F1, after building up over a decade of experience in motorsport, despite only being 28-years-old.

He sat down with hosts Jason Plato and Dave Vitty to discuss his career so far, how he fell in love with F1 and what he plans on doing next.

Harry Benjamin on Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri battling it out

During his chat with the boys, Benjamin questioned whether a constructor can have more than one number one driver, and who is going to take that spot at the Woking-based side. He also looked ahead to the Miami Grand Prix.

“What’s clear from the first five races, and five pretty much very different tracks, is McLaren have been strong at all of them and they are a step ahead of the game,” Benjamin stated.

“Lando Norris got his first win here (Miami) last year, and I think McLaren are going to be strong. I think Red Bull are going to struggle with the temperatures in particular because one of the things that really bites them at the moment is struggling to keep their tyres together when it’s so hot.

“That is the big pro that McLaren have, they just don’t seem to chew up their tyres as well as having a very well designed car.

“I’m still so intrigued by what’s going to happen between Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, I kind of rub my hands together a little bit, I know you shouldn’t, but they do seem very friendly, but they’re so different.

“You have this Piastri character who is as cool as ice, he’s got that Aussie accent and he’s chill, he’s quite likeable, he’s coming out of his shell and really stepped up his game compared to last year.

“Then you have Lando Norris, who has all of this talent, but it’s so interesting to see that he’s not able, seemingly, to be at ease with the speed and the talent that he’s got right now.

“There’s always a little something, whether it’s not hooking up a lap together in qualifying in Bahrain or crashing at the crunch moment in Saudi Arabia.

“He’s under pressure and I don’t know whether he feels that more. And this is the question, can a team have two number ones?”

What is a modular home? https://www.adrianflux.co.uk/blog/2025/04/modular-home/ Mon, 28 Apr 2025 11:06:32 +0000 https://www.adrianflux.co.uk/blog/?p=22681 We examine what a modular home is and look at the pros and cons of owning one.

The post What is a modular home? appeared first on Fluxposure.

]]>
You may be wondering what on Earth is a modular home? Whilst this may not be your typical house in the UK, it’s certainly one that’s growing in popularity.

A modular home is also referred to as a prefab house, but are they really reliable and are they the answer to the UK’s housing crisis

This blog is designed to answer all of your questions and by the end of it, will make you an expert in modular homes.

What are modular homes?

modular home

Whilst many people may think a modular home is a mobile home, they are in fact very different.

A modular home is a prefabricated home and consists of sections (modules). Once the sections have been delivered to the site, they are installed to create the home.

They are made in a factory and delivered to a location and remain permanently in place, making them perfect for those who have bought land and wish to craft their own home.

Unlike new-built houses, modular homes can be tailor-made. New builds are the government’s way of trying to solve the housing crisis, but they can feel like builders have copied and pasted homes in a row and are often criticised for being devoid of any personality. The same can’t be said for their counterparts.

Modular homes are cheaper to construct, are time efficient and, unlike what some may tell you at the pub, still have concrete permanent foundations and building codes.

Construction is often quicker as they only require around half the amount of time as building a house from scratch.

This type of construction became popular after the second world war as they were cheaper to build and create housing after the Blitz

How are modular homes built?

Whilst they are mostly built in a factory, they’re not delivered fully complete at the site. A lot of the work is actually done at the final site before they are rolled out of the factory.

Contractors still have to prep where the home will sit, doing jobs such as levelling the area, digging the ground for permanent foundations, installing pilings and laying the concrete and sill plate.

Every site is different, so the specifics differ, too, but in essence modular homes are like a series of boxes that are put together.

Once the boxes that make up the home are placed together, the plumbing and electricity will be hooked up.

The last steps include the crane operator and set crew putting on the roof (which comes on hinges) and the final waterproofing.

How are modular homes built in a factory?

modular home

They are built in smaller connectable pieces, or modules if you will, in factories and taken to site. Each segment is built to the appropriate size and then integrated into their slots once they arrive on site.

Modular homes are usually around three-quarters complete when they leave the factory. The completion level depends on how bespoke and the designs the homeowner has asked for.

Because the homes are built inside a factory, a major upside is the builds are not dictated to by weather conditions which can slow the process down.

How long do modular homes take to build?

Modular homes are crafted in a third of the time taken to construct a normal new-build or bespoke design.

This is because the home is being made on an assembly line, with all the various construction trades being located in one spot, whilst the landscaping and foundation work can be done at the same time on site, in turn saving you months.

Most modular builds won’t take longer than six months, which is great news for anyone in a hurry to move into their brand-new home. The longest part of the process is deciding exactly what you want your layout to look like.

Are modular homes cheaper to build?

modular home

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the cost of your new modular home will largely depend on the size and intricacies of your build. However, thanks to how quickly these structures can be built, you might find yourself making some considerable savings in labour costs compared to traditional constructions.

Furthermore, modular home construction companies can often negotiate with suppliers to secure discounts on appliances, fixtures and fittings. Which (hopefully) could be passed onto you as a buyer, saving you money in the long run.

You can also save money on architect fees. This is because all they will have to do is draw the size of the rooms and the elevations.

Thinking long-term after your home is complete, you can save a lot of money through energy bills, which leads us onto our next point.

Are modular homes more energy efficient?

Because they’re mostly built inside in controlled environments, modular homes are usually more energy-efficient than comparable homes built entirely on-site.

Construction takes place inside a building factory, which means the materials of your home are not subjected to weather degradation. The tight fittings also mean the walls are enveloped closer which will stop excess cold creeping in.

With optimum insulation, it can save you from expensive heating bills or you can use solar panels to conserve energy in the design process.

Manufacturers also routinely use or offer energy-efficient appliances, fixtures, and other features meant to drive down energy bills.

Will my modular home increase in value?

modular home

Whilst it’s pretty difficult to comment on the value retention of any home in the current climate, experts suggest that modular homes are likely to follow the same upward trajectory as standard construction properties, which is great news for anyone thinking about a new pre-fab home.

Of course, the condition and location of your modular home will play a part in its future value, the same as any other home.

This is no different than standard brick homes, meaning you should not be put off a modular home for fear that the price will not rise over the coming years.

What are the drawbacks to owning a modular home?

Whilst there are many pros to owning a modular home, there are also some cons to consider. Here we’ll examine a few.

Rather obviously, you will need to own a patch of land for your home to be built on. If you purchase afterwards, you will not be able to save any time through the landscaping process. On top of this, you may also need a construction loan first.

As with many building projects, modular homes can, on occasions, also end up being more expensive than originally thought.

Remember that on top of paying for the structure, you will also need to budget for plumbing and electrical services.

Given the portable nature of these constructions, you will also need to think about the travel costs of getting your home delivered to its final site – not to mention the logistics of safely transporting your brand new home on various roads and / or terrains. Whilst on the topic of sites, you should also know that modular homes can’t be built on subdivisions and you will need to gain permission for your design if you have customised your house.

When you own your own home, emergencies can quickly put a dent in your savings – or even put you in financial difficulties altogether. One of the best ways to prepare for these eventualities is taking out home emergency cover alongside your household insurance policy. Here we explain what this type of insurance covers, when it can be useful, and more.

Watch Alex Brundle explain home emergency cover

Want a quick explanation of what home emergency cover is and what it can protect against? Watch as British racing driver and broadcaster Alex Brundle, who is sponsored by Adrian Flux, reveals all.

What does home emergency cover protect against?

Home emergency cover essentially covers any emergency related to your property that throws you for a loop: a burst pipe, a broken boiler, a smashed external window. It looks after a range of temporary, emergency repairs, mostly to structural elements of your home like a roof or plumbing up to £1,000 per claim.

Did you know our home emergency provides up to £250 in a boiler replacement, if the boiler is deemed uneconomical to repair?

Can I take out home emergency cover as a standalone product?

Alex Brundle on stairs at a fair

In most cases no; you usually have to take out home emergency cover alongside your home insurance policy. Just let us know if you want to add this to your own policy.

Who is this type of cover for?

This type of cover is ideal for homeowners, we also offer home emergency for landlords too. Essentially, you would be responsible for resolving an emergency that could impact the safety and security of the home or occupiers.

You’d be responsible for paying out any repairs or replacements, you should consider taking out home emergency cover in case the worst happens.

Is home emergency cover worth it?

Alex Brundle at the fair

In most cases it is, mainly for the peace of mind that this type of cover gives you. For just a small extra fee on top of your home insurance, you can remain safe in the knowledge that, should something happen, you’re protected and won’t need to pay out of pocket.

Do claims on home emergency cover affect my home insurance no claims bonus?

Alex Brundle standing at the top of a fair ride

Home emergencies don’t usually affect your no claims bonus (NCB), although it’s a good idea to check your policy wording to make sure as this depends on your policy. In most cases, as long as you make the claim with the home emergency cover provider, your home insurance NCB should remain intact.

Social media star Michal Fidowicz, also known as Candy Showroom, is the latest guest on series 10 of the award-winning podcast Fuelling Around.

Fidowicz has built up a cult following on Instagram over a number of years and is fast becoming one of the most recognisable faces in the world of automotive video-journalism, having generated over 1.2 million views on his YouTube channel since launching three months ago.

The 26-year-old sat down with hosts Jason Plato and Dave Vitty to discuss his career so far, how he fell in love with cars and what he plans on doing next.

Michal Fidowicz on where his passion for cars started

During his chat with the boys, Fidowicz revealed where his love of all things four-wheeled stems from.

“My parents, I love them to bits, but they don’t know anything about cars. My dad ignores all my car advice, even though I think I know what I’m talking about by now,” Fidowicz joked.

“I used to play a lot of video games when I was younger and car games were just very easy to understand. And I enjoyed them. I enjoyed the imagery of them, I enjoyed the design.

“I like nice things in general, and I think a car is, as you know, it’s the second biggest purchase you make in your life. From an early age I understood that that was going to be a huge part of your life.

“I’m not really sure where it came from (his love of cars), but I know the feeling has been around for a long time, a lot longer than I’ve been driving.

“I used to really enjoy cycling on my bike when I was a kid. I used to love being on the move, being on the road and it all ties together.

“My first car was a (Volkswagen) Polo, but a really rotten one. It had no fifth gear because the gearbox blew up, absolute misery of a car.

“My first proper car, which I bought with my first proper paycheck, I bought myself a (BMW) 3 Series 318i. I was 19 at the time, that was the sexiest car you could own, it was so good. I took care of it and I actually modified it, putting flashier wheels on it.”

How to prepare your holiday home for Airbnb https://www.adrianflux.co.uk/blog/2025/04/prepare-holiday-home-for-airbnb/ Wed, 23 Apr 2025 08:59:49 +0000 https://www.adrianflux.co.uk/blog/?p=22641 Here are the factors to consider before listing your holiday home on the Airbnb site.

The post How to prepare your holiday home for Airbnb appeared first on Fluxposure.

]]>
Since its inception in 2008, Airbnb has revolutionised the modern holiday and, for many people with holiday homes, it can be an easy way to list their second property and get as many guests to see it as possible.

Yes, if your second home isn’t being frequently used, having it on Airbnb could be the perfect side hustle but, you do have to prepare the property first.

In this blog, we’ve broken down a few factors you might want to consider before listing your property as a holiday rental.

How do you get your property onto Airbnb?

Let’s go from the very start. You’ll need an account on the Airbnb website.

Once you’ve set that up, you’ll want to list the property with an interesting description, key information and high-quality pictures. The website itself should guide you on what to include in this bit. You can also take a look at existing listings to see what others have done (and maybe see how you can stand out).

The images you use need to feature your second home looking its best and you will want to ensure that the property meets local regulations before you list it. We’ll go over this in more detail below.

Will you need to check with local authorities before listing on Airbnb?

You will need to check with local authorities, most likely the council, to ensure that short-term rentals are permitted in your area. You may need a licence or planning permission when it comes to a second home so it’s best to check before taking any other steps.

Do you need specialist insurance to list your holiday home on Airbnb?

If you already have holiday home insurance, you will need to let your insurer know that you’re planning to rent it out via Airbnb – this is so you don’t invalidate your current policy with them.

It’s worth noting that many mortgage agreements may restrict or even prohibit short-term rentals so you will need to ask your lender for permission. ‘Consent to let’ is key to moving forward on Airbnb so make sure you ask.

The popular brand also offers ‘AirCover’ for its hosts, including host liability insurance and host damage protection. It’s basically like special Airbnb home insurance but make sure you check the terms and conditions so you know what this will actually cover and what you can claim for.

What should you consider when preparing your holiday home to become an Airbnb?

The better the reviews from the guests, the more likely you’ll get others wanting to stay at your property so, of course, you’ll want to give them the best experience possible. To make your Airbnb a five-star pick, there’s a few things you can easily do.

Cleaning and decluttering

Understandably, your guests will want to arrive to a clean, welcoming space. Remove any unnecessary clutter and make sure your property has all the basics (utilities and furniture).

You’ll want to give the whole space a thorough clean. This will go beyond dusting, wipe downs and hoovering – you’ll also want to wash the carpets, clean the oven, air everything out etc.

Close up of vacuum on wooden floor

Furnishings like sofas and chairs will need a deep clean too, plus fresh sheets should be added to all the beds. For added freshness, use an air freshener or room diffuser so the space smells good as soon as guests walk through the door.

Be sure to leave cleaning products and bin bags in an obvious spot, and detail any cleaning instructions in your listing, to ensure guests know to clean up after themselves too.

Covering the basics

As mentioned, you’ll want to make sure that your property includes certain necessities so they can stay in the property comfortably. This will include furniture like chairs, beds, dressers/wardrobes and tables. It will also include a working kitchen, bathroom essentials like toilet paper, bins and appliances like a kettle, toaster and microwave.

Make sure all forms of lighting is working and you have easily accessible plug sockets so users can charge their devices.

These days, most guests will want a property with Wi-Fi so we would classify that as a necessity as well.

Just think to yourself, ‘Would I stay here?’ when planning how to furnish and decorate your home for Airbnb.

Extra touches

Who doesn’t love a host who goes above and beyond? To make their stay more pleasant, you can leave a few things in your Airbnb to set yours apart.

A few ideas could be:

  • Food and drink – A lot of people pick where they’re staying because they want independence on their holiday, including with food so, you don’t have to stock up on everything but a few snacks and teabags would definitely be appreciated
  • Games – Playing board and card games on holiday is a British tradition so leaving some of these in the living room is sure to be a crowd pleaser
  • Technology – If you’re able to, having a TV or speakers is a nice touch for a guests’ entertainment
  • Welcome hamper – A lovely idea that’s bound to impress. You can include some treats, toiletries and a nice note to truly welcome your guests
Elegant bathroom with guest toiletries and mirror on sink countertop

Security

Your guests will want to feel safe during their stay but you’ll want to know your holiday home is protected too. This is where installing some security measures can come in handy.

Your property should include the appropriate locks and security system, but CCTV or a Ring doorbell could also be added. We’d also recommend getting to know your neighbours.

It can be difficult when you don’t live in that property yourself but they’ll be able to keep a look out for your holiday home when you’re not there.

Set some rules

Lastly, it’s always good to leave a couple of politely written rules for using your property. These can be put on the Airbnb listing but it may give you peace of mind to have some in the property just to remind your guests. Be reasonable and realistic when writing these.

Insuring your holiday home

As we’ve mentioned above, you’ll need to make sure you have the right insurance before listing your property on Airbnb. At Adrian Flux, we offer comprehensive holiday home insurance to suit your needs. We also offer bed and breakfast insurance and holiday let insurance.

If you’re worried about the possessions you keep in your second home, there’s our contents insurance too that will help put your mind at ease.

Racing driver Abbie Eaton is the latest guest on series 10 of the award-winning podcast Fuelling Around.

Eaton has been racing professionally for more than two decades in competitions such as the British GT Championship and the Porsche Carrera Cup Great Britain.

The 33-year-old sat down with hosts Jason Plato and Dave Vitty to discuss her career so far, what it takes to be a pro driver and the true cost of motorsport in 2025.

Abbie Eaton and Jason Plato bemoan the rising cost of karting for kids

During her chat with the boys, Eaton and Plato gave their views on  the rising cost of entry into motorsport.

“It’s getting harder and harder and harder,” Eaton revealed.

“To do a European season in karting for like a 12-year-old, I could race in Porsche Carrera Cup for a season (for a similar price). It’s absolutely bonkers.

“We’re talking £200-300k being spent on go-karting. It’s just bonkers. And the problem is I don’t think it’s ever going to change now.

“I think it’s just on that (upwards) movement and it’s only gonna get worse. I think back in the day, motorsport always had to succeed as a business because ultimately people need wages and paying.

“But I think there was still quite a big element that it was still a sport. Whereas now it’s getting more and more that actually it is purely a business, an entertainment business, and the sport is just getting kind of less and less, which is a real shame.

“As I say it’s a runaway train now and it’s in that direction.”

Plato interjected and added: “I would agree, totally agree.

“It’s so expensive and it’s totally cost prohibitive for anything other than very, very wealthy families. Or families that have got great connections with business.

“In fact I would say it’s probably cost prohibitive for even the wealthy families because it’s just telephone numbers isn’t it?”

Radio DJ and television presenter Trevor Nelson appears as the first guest on series 10 of the award-winning podcast Fuelling Around.

Nelson, who has been a regular on the airwaves and TV screens for more than four decades, is on the pod to discuss his love of all things four-wheeled, including the Mercedes-Benz 280SL, also dubbed the Pagoda.

The 61-year-old, who hosts a show on BBC Radio 2 on Monday to Friday afternoons, is best known for his stints on BBC Radio 1 and Kiss FM, as well as presenting on TV for the BBC, Channel 4, Channel 5 and music network MTV in the 2000s.

Trevor Nelson tells funny story about Jamiroquai owning ‘his car’

During his chat with the boys, Nelson detailed his love of the iconic Mercedes model.

“I fell in love with the TR6 first because I loved the shape of them,” Nelson revealed.

“My mate bought a Triumph Dolomite when we were at college, which we pushed more than we sat in. The Stag was definitely the local aspirational car in my area.

“But I fell in love with the 280SL. I can’t remember when but I had a desire from the early 90s. I just had this thing of: ‘Oh man if I can ever get that car’. I was just one dimensional about it.

“That’s the car, if I could ever have one car, that’s the car. At that time I was driving a red (Vauxhall) Astra, it was my first company car, and then a Jeep Cherokee which was great in a straight line, but couldn’t take a corner.

“And then I fell in love with this car (280SL) and the first person I saw driving one was Jamiroquai. I was working in Holland Park. I saw him driving a white, I think it was a cream or white one.

“He got his deal, he was Jay Kay, Jamirquai, and the crux of it is, I played his record first on national radio on Kiss FM before he was signed, ‘When you gonna learn’. So I was his number one champion.

“Then I see him cruising in this car. I remember thinking: ‘He’s got my car!’ I was going mad. ‘He’s got my car!’. Honestly I was losing it inside my head. But it also reconfirmed how cool that car is.”

How to handle nervous students as a driving instructor https://www.adrianflux.co.uk/blog/2025/04/how-to-handle-nervous-learner-drivers/ Tue, 08 Apr 2025 11:24:05 +0000 https://www.adrianflux.co.uk/blog/?p=22554 Nervous learners can struggle with hesitation, overthinking, and self-doubt, making the learning process challenging. As a driving instructor your approach can make all the difference. Learn how to help nervous students feel more confident.

The post How to handle nervous students as a driving instructor appeared first on Fluxposure.

]]>
Confidence and calmness are the foundation of good driving, but for nervous learners, these can be hard to attain. A patient driving instructor plays a crucial role in managing these fears, helping learners build confidence and develop safe habits. If a learner is nervous about driving lessons, their anxiety can slow progress, cause more mistakes, and turn the lesson into a stressful experience. However, with the right approach, you can transform the experience.

Here, we break down practical steps and techniques to help you handle nervous students.

How confidence affects learning to drive

Confidence plays a major role in how quickly a learner picks up driving skills. Learners who feel self-assured tend to adapt more easily, while nervous drivers may hesitate or second-guess their decisions. A lack of confidence can often fuel nervousness and vice-versa. This cycle can make it harder for nervous learners to progress.

When a learner driver feels very nervous, they may:

  • Hesitate at key moments
  • Overthink tasks
  • Struggle with information overload
  • Develop a fear of failure

By helping nervous drivers feel more in control, instructors can gradually build their confidence, making driving more manageable and less stressful.

Understanding nervous drivers

Driving anxiety or nervousness is more common than many realise. The pressure to perform, fear of mistakes, and even past experiences can create a mental block that slows down learning. Young drivers, particularly those aged 16-24, are statistically more prone to being nervous behind the wheel than other age groups, making it a challenge for instructors.

Without the right support, nervousness and anxiety can hinder a learner’s progress. Overthinking and hesitation can lead to more mistakes, such as missed observations or delayed reactions, which will only reinforce their fears. As a friendly driving instructor, your ability to provide reassurance can make all the difference. Here’s how to help your learners overcome their fears and become confident drivers.

Techniques for instructors to help nervous learners

1. Create a comfortable learning environment

During the first lessons, set the tone for a learner’s confidence. Making them feel at ease from the start will help reduce nerves and help them focus better. Be welcoming and approachable, explain what to expect from that lesson, so they know what it’s coming. Use positive reinforcement, highlighting progress no matter how small.

2. Adapt to their learning style

Every learner is different – some need a gradual approach, while others benefit from driving straight in. Tailoring your teaching style to their needs can help reduce anxiety. For highly anxious students it’s best to start in a quiet area and gradually introduce busier roads. If a lesson suddenly becomes overwhelming, pull over for a quick reset.

3. Break things down to small steps

For learner drivers, multitasking can feel overwhelming. Instead of giving instructions all at once, break it down into numbers:

  1. First, check your mirror
  2. Then indicate
  3. Now take a deep breath
  4. When it’s clear ease onto the road

4. Incorporate breathing techniques into the lesson

A nervous student gripping the wheel too tightly or holding their breath might benefit from a simple breathing exercise. Box breathing, where you breathe in for four seconds, hold for four, exhale for four, can help you both to stay calm during trickier situations.

5. Normalise mistakes

Reassure your students that everyone makes mistakes – even you. You can share relatable stories to make them feel more at ease. If they make mistakes, encourage them to analyse:

  • What happened?
  • How could this mistake have been avoided?
  • What can we do next time?

Turning mistakes into learning experiences will help your students build resilience.

6. Build confidence for motorway driving

Many learners feel anxious about driving on a motorway. Motorway driving lessons for nervous drivers can be challenging. The best approach is to gradually introduce your students to these lessons, starting first with dual carriageways. This will help them learn to adjust their speed before moving onto motorways.

7. Be a calm and patient instructor

If an instructor isn’t naturally calm, handling anxious students can become very difficult. Nervous students can often pick up on their instructor’s energy, so staying composed is essential.

The right instructor can make a world of difference by creating a calm environment, adapting lessons, and offering continued support.

If you feel passionate about helping new drivers gain confidence and want to take your teaching skills further, you might consider becoming an instructor yourself.

Stay protected with driving instructor insurance

As an instructor, protecting yourself and your students should be your top priority. A good driving insurance policy ensures you are fully protected while teaching. Whether you are a new instructor or experienced, having the right coverage provides peace of mind and keeps your business running smoothly. We hope you can help nervous learners become confident drivers.

When it comes to weddings, couples are moving away from tradition and embracing individuality in every detail, including their wedding transport. While classic Rolls-Royces and vintage Bentleys remain a timeless choice, more and more couples are opting for unusual wedding cars that reflect their personality, passions, or even a shared love of film and TV.

In recent years, we have noticed that requests for wedding car insurance related to less traditional vehicles have gone up, with many taking their inspiration from their favourite film and TV shows, or perhaps from the vehicles they have encountered on their travels around the world. Whether you want a cool wedding car, a retro ride, or something completely unusual, here are some of the most unique wedding cars.

1. Classic and American muscle cars

Choosing a classic or American muscle car to arrive in on your big day channels old-school Hollywood glamour. From the cool and unmistakable 1967 Ford Mustang to a Dodge  Charger, these cars will bring nothing but pure attitude. They’re a perfect choice for grooms who want to feel like they have stepped out of a car chase – hopefully without the police following.

2. Volkswagen campervans

A Volkswagen campervan will add a laid-back, relaxed, boho vibe to your big day. It’s usually a dream choice for couples looking for something quirky and nostalgic. Popular choices are a split-screen from the 60s or a fully restored Bay Window model.

Mike Barr, who has run Star Car Hire since 2004, says “Couples are looking for something different to all their friends’ weddings, and they’re trying to outdo each other with the most unusual cars.” He also added: “They’re getting bored of the traditional wedding car. Even turning up at church in a camper van wouldn’t have happened a few years ago, let alone some of the stars of TV and film.”

3. Tuk-Tuks

A three-wheeled tuk-tuk is certainly an unusual wedding vehicle, but it’s certainly one of the most fun. Bride Emma Smith, who worked in India in 2006 and 2007, opted for a tuk-tuk to bring a piece of Mumbai to her big day.

“When I was in India tuk-tuks were my mode of transport,” she added. “I loved them. I just wanted something significant about India to be part of our wedding day and the tuk-tuk was also a bit of fun,” she said.

4. Custom hot rods

For lovers of 1950s Americana, a custom hot rod is a fantastic choice. These one-of-a-kind machines, often finished with flame decals or chopped roofs, are built to bring attention. Expect your wedding photos to capture the rebellious spirit of the 50s.

5. Harley-Davidson motorcycles

Nothing says “fearless couple” quite like arriving at your wedding on a Harley. You can ride solo or opt for a sidecar – whatever you choose, a Harley-Davidson wedding entrance is pure style. The only risk is that the engine’s roar might steal the spotlight before you even walk down the aisle.

6. Armoured vehicle or tank

This might sound like a wild idea but Melanie Garner, from Norfolk, made headlines when she chose an armoured personnel carrier for her wedding. Her husband James was injured while serving in Afghanistan, and the military-style arrival was a tribute and a statement. “Not many people knew about this apart from my family, so it did come as quite a shock to some people when we pulled up outside the church,” she added.

7. A classic London bus

A classic red double-decker London bus is a fantastic option. It’s perfect for transporting the entire bridal party or wedding guests. A cool wedding transportation idea to give your big day a vintage, chic vibe.

8. Wedding tractors

Perfect for countryside weddings, a vintage tractor is a great way for farming couples to showcase their roots. From a restored Massey Ferguson to a classic John Deere, a wedding tractor is an unusual but memorable choice.

9. A stretch Hummer limo

A stretch Hummer limo delivers luxury with nightclub vibes to your wedding day. With onboard lighting, plush seating, and plenty of room, this definitely guarantees an extravagant entrance. Some might consider it over the top, but nothing says “cool and extravagant” like stepping out of a Hummer limo in your wedding dress.

10. Horse and carriage

For the ultimate romance, nothing beats a horse-drawn carriage. This cool wedding transport offers a timeless and romantic experience, making the bride feel like royalty. Imagine the sound of the horses’ hooves, the gentle sway of the carriage, all adding to the special feeling of the day. There has been growing interest in them, as they are a more eco-friendly wedding transportation.

11. DeLorean DMC-12

The DeLorean DMC-12 is probably the definition of an unusual wedding ride. If you are truly a fan of Back to the Future, this is definitely the ultimate wedding car for you. With its unforgettable gull-wing doors, it’s bound to be the highlight of any wedding album.

12. James Bond’s Aston Martin

This must be one of the coolest wedding cars, straight out of a Bond film. Sleek, sophisticated, and effortlessly cool, it’s perfect for couples wanting to add elegance to their big day. Want your wedding entrance to feel like a Hollywood moment? This Aston Martin is the way to go.

13. Citroen 2CV

The Citroen 2CV will add a hint of French charm to your wedding. The 2CV was created in the 1930s as a simple, affordable, and practical car for rural France. Ideal for couples seeking a less formal, more personal wedding experience

14. Volkswagen Beetle

Few cars are as iconic and as cute as the Volkswagen Beetle. Choosing a Beetle as your wedding car will add a touch of nostalgic charm and personality to your big day. The Beetle is also an easy car to decorate, making it an even better option.

15. White London taxi

A classic white London taxi is a no-fuss, cool choice for urban weddings. Its spacious interior means there’s plenty of space even for the most extravagant wedding dress. Plus, you won’t need to worry about getting lost on the way to the venue.

Why hot hatches are the perfect first performance car https://www.adrianflux.co.uk/blog/2025/04/hot-hatch-first-performance-car/ Tue, 01 Apr 2025 13:36:13 +0000 https://www.adrianflux.co.uk/blog/?p=22456 We explain why hot hatches are the perfect first performance car, whether you’re a young driver or a seasoned enthusiast.

Combining all the practicalities of a regular hatchback with the handling and fun of a performance car, we’re convinced that hot hatches are the best way into the world of fast cars. If you’re a young driver looking to get into performance cars, they might be the best option for you. Here’s why.

1. Performance at an affordable price

Whilst a Mustang GT or a Nissan GT-R are arguably nicer to look at and more powerful than most hot hatches, they’ll cost you a lot more money. One of the most popular hot hatches, the VW Golf R, can be bought used for between £10,000 and £20,000, whereas a used Nissan GT-R can cost anywhere from £40,000 to £80,000. That’s quite the difference.

Granted, the more expensive grand tourer or sports car will have a higher top speed and more horsepower, and we’re not disputing that – we love those cars too. But if you’re looking for a car that can give you a taste of driving fast while also providing the comfort and practicalities of a “regular” car, a hot hatch is a great start.

2. Practical daily driver

Kids’ sporting events, weekly shops, holidays away, helping friends move – daily life is busy and it often comes with lots of, well, things. Things – and passengers – that simply won’t fit in a two-seater convertible with just enough trunk space for a single piece of luggage.

Of course, a more compact performance car that forgoes cargo and seating space in favour of power is perfect for those who can afford to own and maintain two cars, but if you’re looking for a more affordable solution that can be used as both a daily driver and a thrill seeker, the trusty hot hatch blends performance with everyday usability.

Essentially, you still retain rear seats and cargo space while enjoying the extra oomph that that little extra horsepower provides. And all without having to own multiple vehicles.

3. Easy to handle

If you’re a young driver looking for a car that handles well, many of the hot hatch options available in the UK are lightweight, responsive and easy to control. You’ll find that popular hot hatches, such as the Ford Fiesta ST, Volkswagen Golf GTI or Hyundai i20 N, have responsive steering, allowing you to take corners with ease, and decent suspension, so you can go over bumps in the road comfortably.

4. Fun to drive

Of course, you’re here to have fun, and most hot hatches can deliver that in spades. Combine their sharp steering and lightweight design with their turbocharged engines and you’ve got yourself a car that’s fun to drive (within the speed limit, of course), especially on winding B roads.

And you can enjoy the journey with friends in the back too.

5. Usually fairly fuel efficient

Most of the popular hot hatches – including the Ford Fiesta ST, MINI Cooper S, or the Hyundai i20 N – can provide around 35-45 miles per gallon (mpg). Compare this to more expensive performance cars and you get a lot more bang for your buck. Take, for instance, the Porsche 911 Carrera, a much higher-end performance car: its mpg is closer to 20-30.

6. Strong aftermarket support

One of the best aspects of owning a hot hatch is – because they’re so popular and based on regular hatchback models – you’ll find spare parts like tyres, brakes and clutches fairly easily and for an affordable price.

This also means that, in general, you can modify your hot hatch without worrying about skyrocketing costs or limited parts. You can often remap your hot hatch for extra horsepower or change the wheels for a unique look. And, as hot hatches are so popular in the UK, there are plenty of tutorials online to help you.

7. Affordable to run

Combine widely accessible parts with decent fuel efficiency and you’ll find that hot hatches are much more affordable to run than higher-end sports cars. This is perfect for younger drivers who are already facing fairly high costs.

One of the ways you can save is that many hot hatches fall into lower road tax bands due to their smaller engines and fuel efficiency.

And if your hot hatch breaks down, parts and repairs won’t cost you a fortune, nor will you have to take your vehicle to a specialist mechanic to get it repaired, which can sometimes be the case for higher-spec performance cars.

8. Tend to hold their resale value well

Orange Renault Megane RS

Hot hatches have a thriving community full of enthusiasts surrounding them, so there’s usually a lot of demand for the more popular hot hatches, such as the Honda Civic Type R or Renault Megane RS. As a result, they tend to hold onto their resale value well, so when you’re ready to move onto a more powerful car you won’t be left too out of pocket.

9. Strong community of enthusiasts

As mentioned above, there’s a large community around hot hatches, so you’re sure to find plenty of meet-ups, online discussions and YouTube videos. And if you’re looking for high-speed hijinks, there are plenty of track days you can go to.

10. The insurance is often more affordable too

If you do end up buying a hot hatch and you’re looking for insurance, we can help. As a specialist insurance broker, we have a unique understanding of the needs of hot hatches owners and other high-performance vehicles, so can often get you a better deal on your cover.

If you’re in the market for a hot hatch and you’re wondering how much your insurance would be, get a quote with us to see how much you could save. Simply give us a call on 0800 369 8590 or book a callback at a time that suits you.
